Trigger warning: abuse.
In this story, fictional Oakland teenager Jalal spends an evening stalking his cousin’s ex husband while coping with severe inattention issues. As he reflects on the implications of seeking revenge in the present, memories and random distractions drive home all the ways that one community’s differing understandings of masculinity, marriage, faith, justice and mental health can grow and clash across generations. Reckoning with marital and spiritual abuse, it is also an exploration of the pointlessness of trying to force singular narratives onto real life situations.
About the author:
E.K. Hassan started writing long convoluted novels at about ten years old and never grew out of it. Lately he has resorted to short stories for lack of time. His work alternates back and forth between extremes of total sci-fi/fantasy and life experiences lightly fictionalized.
